Final Magazine Front Cover

this is the final! and we have used a lot of conventions and we have also challenged some.
used:

  • bar code

  • masthead

  • date/price

  • website

  • plug/puff

  • cover lines

and we have challenged

  • tag line - it is linked to the magazine also movie

  • new actress being introduced

it is not common to introduce a new actress on the magazine front page, however we challenged this and introduced a new actress.

as you can see the colours are the same as the ones used in the poster and teaser. it was important to use the same colours.

when we did our premier we made our invitations and they looked like this:

we put thumb prints on the invitations, to make it look cool and effective and scary, to add to the horror genre! this was quiet fun! my thumb prints were very good =]. any way on the invitations we used words that linked to our film. so we wrote you have been summoned, this we thought was perfect!!! and we were very excited.

a lot of people came to view our trailer, and see the posters and magazine front cover, and we got a lot of feed back mostly all positive.

there was about 1 or 2 negative feed back, however most people said that they loved it.

all my feedback is in my evaluation. you can have a look at that. prezi was something new to me but it was very exciting. i have never used it before and that is the exciting part, i love to play around with things my self, although there was a video you watch before using it, i didnt watch it as i just wanted to get into it and try everything and experiment myself.

The Final Poster!!

this is the completed poster! i am very happy with the poster!
mist has been used, this represents mysteriousness, it shows the unknown! weve used the same colours in the poster and the magazine front cover, the colours are Red, Black, and White. these are the main colours , these colours have been used through out our teaser trailer so it is right that we use it in the poster and magazine.

i have analysed otehr posters and have used some conventions of horror posters, however we have challenged a lot of things for example almost all of the horror posters are dark and our one is very bright and light as i said in the teaser the light is usd becuase it is challenging a convention of the horror genre, as people feel safe during the day so we are making them feel scared in their own comfort zone.

we have used the same font in the poster, teaser and magazine , the font for the movie name is the same it is called open classic it is important to use the same because it is an important link between the the products.

we have used the main things in the poster the name, tagline, production name, director, producer, website. however we do not have a proper date this is because the teaser says coming soon and does not have a date so it would not make sense if the poster had a date. and it is a link in between the two.

The Summoning Teaser Trailer

i have added the teaser trailer here on the blog, if you look on the right side of my blog you can see that i also have the teaser trailer from youtube on it so it can be accessed quickly, instead of trying to find it from all the postings.

As you can see unlike other Horror teaser trailers or even trailers, ours is mostly set in day light! you must be thinking WHY??!!

well the reason this has been done is because people are not scared of the day! it their comfort zone, people stay in during the night because they feel unsafe around the time as it is dark! but we challenged this convention of setting in the DARK to make it day time so people feel scared and can say "omg things like this can happen during the day!" so yes we have challenged a convention and for a good reason too! =]

as you can see the music we have used is orchestral church music, this was done due to the fact that we have so much religious symbols and meaning and usage in our teaser that it just fits in perfectly! also as we have used the olden type biblical writing for the title of the movie that its perfect! it creates the exact affect that we wanted, we have put the right notes, high sounds and scary parts of the music in the right places of the teaser so that it fits nicely and is not out of place.

we speeded up some of the durations and added effects all on photoshop premier pro. this i must say i have never used before! EVER! so it was a new experience for me, i must say i did enjoy it and i learnt it quite quickly! i also learned a lot of short cuts for example c = cut, very exciting!

instead of using a voice over we have used text in our teaser trailer through out in different places: Death, Destruction and Darkness follows. we decided not to use voice overs because there is a lot going on in the trailer and we feel that the music is very important in our trailer and we did not want the a voice over taking the audiences attention.

We used blood in our teaser trailer this is what makes it an 18! we used blood because it is one of the conventions of horror, a lot of horror films use it, as it represents death, and death is a scary thought!

we used a knife as well! that is used in films such as Halloween (1976), a weapon is a convention of the horror genre and its mostly a knife, this is something that is found in every household.

we tried to use the Final girl theory but we challenged it and subverted it a bit, the final girls in other horror movies have androgynous names, wear baggy dark clothes, hair in pony tails and are innocent. however we challenged this convention, the final girl in our horror movie has a name that is Elizabeth, this name is a very olden time name, she is a murderer although it is her mother that kills people it is still her body and that is how we have challeneged it so much! our final girl is very innocent as she does not know what is happening to her.

we used a lot of conventions for camera shots and angles, and we challeneged it =] this is by using the dolly shot which no horror teaser trailer actually use because it takes long, however we used it and then we speeded up the duration.

over all we are happy with our teaser trailer, and our feedback showed that the audience enjoyed it very much too! we got a lot of positive feedback, as you can see on my evaluation

one negative feedback was that there was too much in the woods, looking at our trailer after i also think that this comment is true, if we are given the chance to change anything we would have less, probably add a different scene or change the way it is set.

WE are definetly happy with it and i really enjoyed making it and i learned a lot! very much!

The main picture used

this is the main picture we used:

Begining the process of creating the poster

Firstly we had to sort out whether we were going to use a picture that we had already taken whilst filming or if we were going to take new pictures.
we went trough all the pictures that we have taken and we took out quite a lot of pictures that we really liked and thought would work well with our poster. we went through them all it felt like we were auditioning for the best one. once we picked out the best picture then the creatign could start. the picture that picked out has perfect lighting that we may not be able to get if we tried to take another picture like that one again. this is because the light is directly above of the main character. the picture is of the main character in the woods, we chose this becuase it uses quite a lot of horror conventions, for example isolation, and final girl/victim/monster.

Final chosen draft for the poster.

i like this as a rough idea for the poster, this is because we have a lot of photos that can help us create a poster like this, it consists of having the main character in the middle of the poster, as done by many other real posters for example Friday The 13th. in the draft you can see that i have also added mist, this is used a lot in horror posters, as it represents something mysterious and the unknown, this is how i want the poster to look, mysterious. the poster will also have the directors name, producers name, actors name and the production name at the bottom of the poster, this is very common in horror posters. however, this draft posters title is at the top instead of being at the bottom which is the case in most horror posters. this is becuase at the moment it is unsure were we might put the title, but we are goign to play around with where the title looks the best.

Draft ideas for the poster.

Our poster - ideas

by analysing other posters, i have gained a few rough ideas of what our poster can look like.
i the posters that i analysed i noticed that a lot of things were being used:

mist - this was used in almost all teh posters
the main colours that were used were mainly White, Black and Red
there was a lot of focus to the centre of teh posters, usually done by a different colour around the edges of the posters.
the title of the film in almost all the posters is at the bottom, and the tag line either at the top or in the middle of the poster.
some of the images that are used in the posters are of the main characters.

this has given me a lot of knowledge, help and ideas for our posters.

Other posters

i have looked at these posters as they are very interesting! please do look at them.

Analysing film poster Friday The 13th

Analysing film poster The Mist

Analysing horror posters

i have analysed a lot horror posters, i have done this by using the Internet to find the posters. this has helped to see conventions of horror posters, the colours that are used, the type of images and the text, if the font is simple or not? some of the posters that i have analysed are:

  • The Exorcist

  • Final Destination

  • Saw (all of them)

  • Haunting in Connecticut

i also analysed a lot of magazine front covers, for example front covers of Empire magazines to see if there was any link or some kind of signature picture that they use to make their magazine stand out or the way it is.

thinking of the poster....

although we split up the poster and the front cover of the magazine cover between our selves, we still helped each other out by having an input in what we feel is right and what does not look right.

me and my partner were assigned the poster, i was very glad i was doing the poster because i like to edit pictures and i like to create posters and things like that.

firstly, i drew a few designs of how the poster could look like so that it gives us a rough idea of where to start and how it will look. we also looked at other posters for inspirations.

Youtube!

i have just created a youtube account called 666 Productionz i had to write productions with a z becuase all the rest were taken sadly but this will work just fine. i uploaded our teaser trailer which you can find under the title of The Summoning Media A2 level teaser. however the video uploaded perfectly fine and quickly but youtube has to process the video before it is properly uploaded and that takes forever! other people have said that they have had to wait for about 2 hours for their videos to be processed! it took 1 hour to process it! but patience is everything! i have suggested on the page that people leave their comments as it will be useful so now we can just wait. i am quite excited about what people will say. my page for 666 productionz i have tried to use the main colours as my theme as it is used through out our trailer.

Teaser trailer finished

our teaser trailer is now finished :D we thats what we think. now we just have to wait for feed back from our audience and if any changes need to be made then we will need to consider them and make them if we have to. i have come up with an idea of uploading our teaser trailer on to youtube.com and letting people watch it and comment on it. also e-mailing it to families and friends and letting them give good feedback on it. this is all to help us to improve... if we need to :D

The editing

when we first saw all of our filming we didnt know where to begin. we had so much! we looked at our story board and decided what was chnaged and what stayed the same we put everything in order and started! we first started with the scene were Elizabeth was praying, we decided that that would be our opening scene, the scene was a bit slow so we decided it needed to be speeded up, so i made the duration faster for the scene i changed it a few times to make it perfect then i cut the part of when elizabeth opens her eyes as it took quite long to get there and made that bit slow down a to create a scarey affect as it is quite important, this i did seperatly as it would affect the rest of the scene if done together. the director dedicated a whole day and put most of the scenes in place with the help of the story board.

the camera women made a lot of suggestions of what would look better and added a few affects. i put some of the walking scenes together as it gave it a freaky scary affect, however there was one shot that the group did not like so i removed it :) you have to keep the group happy. but that wasnt a problem i just simply took it out :D .for the rain scene i added a ghost affect from the video effetcs this made the shot look more scary and i also speeded up the duration.

the director and the camera women put the music in to place so it fitted well with the teaser. we all added affects such as dip to black and or cross fade in to the trailer. i did too my self add these affects so that the teaser trailer looked smooth and not like it has been cut and jus been put together. we all came up with the words that are used it the trailer, the producer photoshoped the words to make them look more horror type text, and then placed them in to adobe premier to and cut them up a lot of times and moved them around so that it gave it the affect as if the text was shaking. this worked very well.

the producer and i (the editor) took pictures of 3 dices all placed in a way which u can see the their six dots. we placed them together and took quite a lot of pictures for our logo. after i took some pictures and the producer took some, and found the best picture, the producer then edited it in photoshop and brought her ideas and showed us we decided the best one and edited it a bit more by deciding the colour of the text that should be used and the font. after this was done we then moved it to adobe premier where then we could add it to our teaser, which we did and it fitted well and perfectly.

we decided to change the colour of our title it was yellow before and we thought that everything in our trailer is either black, white or red. therefore we should make the title one of those colours we then played around with the colour a while and added a few affects, i played around with the lighting a little. we changed the colour to white and thought it suited better. we were thinking of changing the text of the title but the director correctly pointed out that horror film titles are usually quite simple so we decided it will be kept.

Music for our Teaser trailer

we wanted the music to be scary and include orchestra, this creates a very scary affect.. we searched on youtube and other sites, and the camera women and the director found the perfect track to which we all agreed on, it is called 'Summon the Demons' even the title links with our teaser! this was found on youtube and we needed the track. so i was able to get the track downloaded from youtube and then we were able to listen to it with the trailer and it sounded perfect. :)

choosing the name of our film

we had a difficult time trying to come up with a name for our film. we were thinking of calling it Elizabeth at first this is because that is the main characters name in the film. also becuase some horror films use the names of their main characters for the title of their films. for example :

1) The Excorcist Of Emily Rose
2) Gothika

however, i suggested that we should look at the bible and come up with some biblical type words as our film has a lot of religion in it and it would fit perfectly if we came up with something religous. we did quite a lot of research on this. we all thought of many words and the producer came up with summoned, we all really liked that but then we changed it to The Summoning which was perfect! we were very happy with the name we all agreed to it!

Filming 5th December

this was the last time we were going to film. we gave up our saturday morning and got up very early for a saturday to film the last shot! the first shot of the day was at the graveyard, our actress the producer filmed the shot of the graveyard, we chose to do this of a tomb stone that looked quite old and had a big cross. this brings out the religion again to our film. after this shot was filmed we then went to our sencond location the directors house.
here we filmed the rain scene, we used a hose pipe to create the affect of rain however we messed around with the pipe to find the best way to make the water look like rain droplets and we did. the producer our actress then had to stand in the middle of the garden and scream very loud while water was being poured on her. we done a few of these shots, the producer suggested that i do some close ups if the scene while filming and i did and this turned out to be quite a good effect.
we also filmed pigeons flying away, this was random at the time but when we played it back to see how it looked at teh scene we thought we can use this and decided to do some more takes. this was turning out to be a good day. we all participated on this filming day and had a good time and were happy as it was over :)

filming 3rd December

before we went to our location, the producer and i had to find a picture that would best suit the mother of Elizabeth, once we found the picture we then added some touches to it, by using photoshop and making it look antique. we then printed it a few times, once in black n white and then the other times n colour but different sizes. this is so that when we put it in the frame the one that looks and fits the best can be used. we then rushed to our location as we had very little time to prepare the mis en scene and then record the scene. we wanted to give this scene a very modern touch, we wanted the camera to go around the character and zoom in to her face then her eyes. we were not very sure how we were going to do this becuase we did not have special equipment. however, our producer's dad owns a Dolly and she was able to bring it and let us use it. the producer showed and explained to us how to use the dolly in the best way. so we placed the camera and the stand on the dolly while i moved the dolly the director filmed the shot and the camera women gave the orders to tell the character when to look up. the shot was very interesting. we done the shot a few times so that we could get it as perfect as we could. it was rather fun filming this shot i really enjoyed it. we were very careful not to burn our selves while we all prepared the scene, we used candles becuase it gives a religous theme which is what we wanted. =D
