Audience of Horror

the age range of the audience of horror is from about 13-25 years. the age is said to be till 25 years becuase people become more mature and start to stop believing in horror movies. the young from 13 years onwards see it as challenging and cool to watch a horror movie. it is something they can discuss with their friends and enjoy it at the same time. the elderly do not watch horror movies becasue they see it as pointless and they can be very vulnerable to it.

What effect can the Horror genre have on its audiences?
there are norms to horror genre which the little effects of horror movies..

  • fear from watching the movie
  • excitment and the thrill
  • the audience are jumpy from watching scary films
  • some people have fainted during horror films for example few people fainted whilst watching Saw5 in the cinema
  • some people start to panic which then increases their heart rates
  • some mostly the young have nightmares

some of the extreme effects of horror movies are

  • heart attack if the people are very fragile
  • horror movies can give others ideas and they would want to try out what happens in the film for example when two children copied scenes from Child play 3 this was very violent and can have bad effects on peole especially children
  • create psychopaths which leads to violence
  • PJSD

the people that are most vulenrable to this are the children under 13. people that usually watch horror films tend to watch it in a secure environment and setting, they usually try not to watch it during the nights, they watch it with others in the room with them not on their own.

however it there are people and groups out there who have the resposibility to protect individuals. for example parents are ment to protect their children from watching the appropriate films. horror can be a big problem if the child is under age and is allowed to watch a very scary film then they will face the effects which can be nightmares and so on. The Britsh Board of Film Classification (BBFC), they are very important because they give the age from where the people can watcha film. for example Paranormal Activity (2009) is rated 15 so children and adults above the age of 15 can watch this film at the cinema and should be the only ones watching it at home. this is because the film is very scary and can have bad effects on people under the age of 15.

there are some moral panics about horror films:

  • horror films are usually at the centre of moral panics. they usually come out when something related to the film it going on. so this scares people even more.
  • Cohen (1972) argues that a moral panic is when the media amplifies an event to refer its consequences to much wider social issues.
  • a moral panic is essentially a 'crusade' against behaviour or percieved.

so as you can see horror can have many affects on its audiences and people.
