Filming on Tuesday 1st December

We filmed on tuesday the 1st of December, the day was a very cold one, it was extremly hard to stay warm especially as we were filmin outside in a park. Our main person cast who is also our producer had the most difficult job, as she had to wear a nighty and stand in the cold weather with nohting else on. but she is a natural actor, and i am very grateful to her for being so brave and puting up with us giving her orders while she was freezing to death. =) our first location on our schedule was Tootting Bec park, before we went to the location we collected all our equipment and took them to tooting bec park in our directors car. the first scene was the policeman investigating a dead body, the dead body was actually me lieing on some white sheets on the floor and i had white sheets with blood splatered on it this is used ina lot of horror films. blood is a very big icon in the genre of horror, films such as Saw use blood. it was very cold as i lay on the floor while the group got the scene perfect. after this scene was done we carried out the jumping scene of Elizabeth who is played by our producer. we had to stop every now and then so that she could warm up as it was very cold. thankfully the scene looked good becuase the weather was not wet, it was dry and sunny. so the lighting was no problem. the actress (producer) had to put in some white contact lenses which shows that she is different, we had to do her make up aswel. we also shot a hand held camera scene of some one running through the woods it wasa point of view shot, and we had a bloody hand at the end. hand held camera shots are used alot through out horror. Clover feild inspired us to do this shot. we were finally finished with the tooting bec park scenes, therefore we could move on to the scenes in the directors house.

the next scene was the bath tub scene where the actress (producer) had to be liying in water and then she would suddenly come out of the water and be gasping for air. this was hard becuase we had to be very careful not to get the camera wet, that is why before that i got a square piece of glass to put infront of the camera so it would not get wet, but the water didnt splash much so we didnt use the glass at the end. we had a few issues to think about here, especially because the safety of our actress was invovled. the water was making her slip and we did not want her to hurt her self so one of our members was holding on to her to prevent her from slipping. this made it quiet hard to film the scene but we got there at the end. water is used very often in horror especially shower or bath tub scenes, for example Carrie has a shower scene, Psycho also has a shower scene and The Grudge to name a few. so we were inspired by the affect it gives.

after the bath scene was accomplished successfully we moved on to the knife shot, where some was holding a knife in their hands very tightly that it made it bleed. we had to think about the safety of teh actor in this. therefore we made sure that the knife was very blunt and we wraped lots of soft tissue around it where the kinfe would be in the actors hand, so that they do not cut themself. we used blood on this scene aswel to show that the cut has caused blood to come out. and finally we completed on a crab scene, this is where our actress (producer) done the crab walk and you can see her eyes, it was quiet scary. although it was a very long day we accomplished quiet a lot and we were all very happy =D.

Our Synopsis of the Horror Movie

after thinking and coming up with so many ideas we as a group have put our ideas together and come up with the story line and synopsis.

A reserved, quiet and religious young girl is traumatized by her family life as she grows up without a mother and a mentally disturbed father. Elizabeth hardly has any friends, she tends to spend time praying in front of her late mother's photograph. Until one night she receives a mysterious phone call. Evil, destruction, murder and rage falls upon Elizabeth's life as a turn of events causes the biggest tragedy of the century.

we came up with other storylines, like for example:
1) a haunted house, a couple move into a house and the women senses that there is something wrong with the house, she trys to tell her partner but he says its nothing. her partner goes on a business trip and bizaar things start to happen things that can not be explained. she also finds that there have been some murders occuring on the road and is very frightened.

2) A group of friends decide to go to one of their friends house as her parents are away. they want to do something daring so they use the Ouija board. not everyone is happy about this. however they decide to go along with it. when they do start with the baord they get scared becuase the ouija board says some uncomfartable things. the friends do not take notice of these messages and ignore them, but they do not know that this will change their lives for ever.

Audience of Horror

the age range of the audience of horror is from about 13-25 years. the age is said to be till 25 years becuase people become more mature and start to stop believing in horror movies. the young from 13 years onwards see it as challenging and cool to watch a horror movie. it is something they can discuss with their friends and enjoy it at the same time. the elderly do not watch horror movies becasue they see it as pointless and they can be very vulnerable to it.

What effect can the Horror genre have on its audiences?
there are norms to horror genre which the little effects of horror movies..

  • fear from watching the movie
  • excitment and the thrill
  • the audience are jumpy from watching scary films
  • some people have fainted during horror films for example few people fainted whilst watching Saw5 in the cinema
  • some people start to panic which then increases their heart rates
  • some mostly the young have nightmares

some of the extreme effects of horror movies are

  • heart attack if the people are very fragile
  • horror movies can give others ideas and they would want to try out what happens in the film for example when two children copied scenes from Child play 3 this was very violent and can have bad effects on peole especially children
  • create psychopaths which leads to violence
  • PJSD

the people that are most vulenrable to this are the children under 13. people that usually watch horror films tend to watch it in a secure environment and setting, they usually try not to watch it during the nights, they watch it with others in the room with them not on their own.

however it there are people and groups out there who have the resposibility to protect individuals. for example parents are ment to protect their children from watching the appropriate films. horror can be a big problem if the child is under age and is allowed to watch a very scary film then they will face the effects which can be nightmares and so on. The Britsh Board of Film Classification (BBFC), they are very important because they give the age from where the people can watcha film. for example Paranormal Activity (2009) is rated 15 so children and adults above the age of 15 can watch this film at the cinema and should be the only ones watching it at home. this is because the film is very scary and can have bad effects on people under the age of 15.

there are some moral panics about horror films:

  • horror films are usually at the centre of moral panics. they usually come out when something related to the film it going on. so this scares people even more.
  • Cohen (1972) argues that a moral panic is when the media amplifies an event to refer its consequences to much wider social issues.
  • a moral panic is essentially a 'crusade' against behaviour or percieved.

so as you can see horror can have many affects on its audiences and people.

what is horror

Every film genre similar conventions like mis-en-scene, camera work and editing, narrative structure, narratives based on issues emerging, characters, icons and music and sound. A film would not work without these conventions. Conventions of a horror movie would be:

  • for violent actions faster cutting is usually used

Narrative structure:

  • propp's character theory
  • victims reveal the murderer and or kill the murderer, the victims usually use their skills and become stronger through out
  • conforms of Todorov's equilibrium, disruption, retoration of equilibrium
  • binary oppositions between life and death, good and evil which lead to resolution of conflict but often have twists at the end showing that not all is well

Characters:

  • innocent girls
  • fianl girl
  • victims become hero
  • psychologically damaged adults
  • monsters
  • hedonistic teenagers

  • battles between good and evil
  • supernatural hauting an individual
  • history with the villian therefore they come back for revenge

these are the conventions of a Horror genre, some examples of these films would be:

  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
  • Halloween (1978)
  • The Ring (2002)
  • Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

Some films only a limited amount challenege these conventions by making them horror/comedy genre or thriller/horror genre. this would be subverting genres. some examples of these would be:

  • Shaun of the Dead (2004)
  • Scary Movie's (2000)
  • Scream(1996)

About My Self!

i am a student at NMBEC currently studying media obviously. i have a great interest in media, i am also studying 2 other as levels which are Business studies and Sociology. i enjoy those very much aswel. I have seen many horror films. although i am a very big fan of horror movies i really did not know how we were going to come up with a story of our own, even though i had a lot of ideas of my own but i am a bit nervous at the fact that our story may not be scary! but i have faith and it will be very scary :D...
